Who the YLE Starters exam is for?

Entry level exams designed primarily for children around 10 years of age who have already completed approximately 100 hours of English language study.
The exam is set for CEFR level pre-A1.

  • Why take the YLE Starters exam

    - Research shows that children develop positive attitudes towards a foreign language and its learning through testing. Children enjoy preparing for and taking YLE exams.

    - During the exam, children colour, draw, talk to the examiner, among other things, and this entertains and motivates them. At the same time, by preparing for the exam, they build a foundation for language learning and learn practical language skills.

    - The test thus provides a reliable and uniform measure of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

    - Every child who passes the Cambridge English: Young Learners exam receives a Cambridge English certificate as a motivation for further language study. The certificate is in the form of a report card, which shows the number of "points" achieved in the following areas: reading and writing, listening and speaking.

    - Schools around the world use these tests to motivate children to learn English and show parents the progress their children are making. YLE exams are becoming increasingly popular and several thousand children take them every year in the Czech Republic alone.
